If you are not involved with a trading group or site, they are fairly easy to find via web search. Someone started an ATC trading thread at one of my "internet homes" and I've received some lovely cards:

The other participants used some pretty neat media. There is a painting, a digital collage, a stamp print and what I think might be a beeswax/tissue collage.

Here is the card I sent all of them:

It's gouache with graphite outlining. Pretty simple and fun to make.

By now, ATCs are old news to most of us.

Well, not me.

And maybe they're new to you, too.

I was vaguely aware of them but figured it was something pretty that scrapbookers did and at some point I'd stop and smell the roses, er, admire the artwork. Then I took a drawing class earlier this year and the first assignment was to create ten artist trading cards. It was a lot of fun. I got into the habit of making them and sharing them friends has been a nice fringie to it.

So. "What are artist trading cards?" you might be asking; that is, if you're not asking which remote cave I've been living in to have not done this sooner. Let me give you a quick rundown:

An ATC is a card created by you using any medium.

They are 2.5 x 3.5. (Thus the title of the blog.)

They are traded and sometimes just given away but never sold.

Here are the ones I created for that class assignment:

If you're looking at those examples and thinking, "Hey! I could do that!" well, good. That's what I want. To help you get started, here's a link the ATC cutting template for Ruthann Zaroff's excellent Mirkwood Designs website. she also has templates for envelopes and number of other nifty project starters.
